This sensational silver coin, shaped like a handheld games console, is a tribute to the legendary device, of which 119 million units were sold in various versions.

In the late 1980s, video games were mainly played at home on TV or PC or on arcade machines in games halls. In 1989, however, a device appeared that changed the rules of the game from the ground up. This small grey box made it possible to take your favourite digital entertainment anywhere – to school or even in the car. It wasn’t the only portable console on the market, but unlike its competitors, who focused on colour graphics and high processing power, the manufacturer took a completely different approach. The device featured a small monochrome display without backlighting, an 8-bit processor and rather unimpressive graphics, and yet it became a legend – because it offered affordability, long battery life, physical durability and a superb library of games. This faithful companion to an entire generation has now been replaced by far more powerful handheld consoles and smartphones, but it still remains a symbol of a time when all it took to be happy was a free afternoon and four AA batteries… Can you guess the name of this famous console?

To resemble the actual historical device, the reverse side of the coin, in the form of a handheld console, is faithfully coloured. On the obverse side, you’ll find a space for the batteries. As the Power Coin is issued under licence from a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, its obverse side also bears the necessary attributes: the national coat of arms, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2026, all incorporated into the game cartridge.
